Welcome!
Hi, we are Trevor and Emma, avid adventurers and founders of Cut Lunch Adventures based in Sydney, Australia. When not at home we’re often found on a trekking adventure somewhere in the Himalayas, New Zealand or Australia. Our biggest adventure was our project to trek to the base camps of all the world’s 14 highest mountains over 8,000m – which we have recently completed!
We believe adventures allow you to grow and the mountains always have something to teach you, which is why we set up Cut Lunch Adventures – to inspire, motivate and encourage people on their own adventures in life – with a focus on mountain trekking, often at high altitude.
Trekking is more than your normal holiday – you have to be physically fit and have your head in the right space. You come back with different perspectives on life. It’s also more than just the trek itself – it’s the preparation beforehand and the lasting impact afterwards. In fact, you could call it an adventure project.
While we’ve been on many great trekking adventures, we’ve always felt there were gaps before and after the trek, which we had to try hard to fill ourselves:
Before treks we wanted to:
- know how to prepare? what to take? what to expect? The things we couldn’t find on Google or in brochures.
- know what’s involved, having learnt that trekking is 80% mental and 20% physical.
- have more connection – if not with our trekking group then with like-minded adventurers, we wanted to get more absorbed in the trekking and mountain culture and community rather than feeling alone in our endeavour.
After treks we wanted to:
- share and re-live the experience with like-minded adventurers who would really understand the satisfaction and achievement.
- continue to enjoy and reflect on the trek, not have it fade into the distant memory like many other holidays once you’ve gone back to your normal routine.
- stay connected with the trekking/mountain community and culture.
So this was the motivation to set up Cut Lunch Adventures – to help others have a more engaging and satisfying experience from start to finish. Adventure as a Service! We’re different from other hiking websites in that we offer resources for:
- every phase of your adventure – before (ideas and preparation), during and after
- we have a focus on insights, self-discovery and mental aspects of adventure
- we have lots of fun stuff to do as well as practical tools and calculators
“Be daring, do your best and seek support.”
Our Experience
We’ve both grown up with a sense of adventure and have travelled extensively for work and pleasure. While we’d done a bit of hiking / trekking / tramping in the past it wasn’t until the last five years or so that we rediscovered it when we set ourselves the big challenge of trekking to Everest Base Camp, inspired by the opportunity to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the first ascent of Mt Everest with fellow adventurers and climbers.
To prepare for that trek we did a number of multi-day hikes in New Zealand and Australia. Once in Nepal, we were immersed in an intoxicating culture and were captivated by the truly spectacular highest mountains in the world. We became hooked on the whole experience that trekking offers – new goals to focus on, physical and mental fitness, a vibrant community of trekkers and mountaineers, and gaining new perspectives on life. It’s a life changing adventure.
We have since completed over 50 treks in places as diverse as Asia, Patagonia, USA and the Canadian wilderness as well as many more in the Himalayas, New Zealand and Australia – mostly with altitude and attitude! We set ourselves a challenge to trek to the base camps of the world’s 14 highest mountains over 8000m – we call it Project Base8000 – and we have recently completed it!
Coming from backgrounds in the corporate world in technology and marketing we have combined many aspects from our professional experience with our passion for trekking and the mountains to create Cut Lunch Adventures.
We love hearing about others’ adventures in life and providing inspiration, motivation and encouragement where we can. We’ve also been guest speakers on high altitude trekking for groups travelling to the Himalayas.
We’ve found that people each have their own motivation for trekking such as wanting a new challenge or a holiday with purpose, reaching a milestone birthday, ticking off a bucket list item, wanting a circuit-breaker or to get away from it all, searching for new perspectives on life and to see what they’re capable of.
In the community we like to support the Australian Himalayan Foundation, Girls in Technology Nepal and we’ve also been volunteers for the Sydney Coastrek.
We are members of the Austrian Alpine Club (UK) and the Canberra Climbers’ Association.
